About the Artist

A native of Pennsylvania, James Fitzpatrick has traveled and photographed throughout the United States. James began serious photography forty years ago during a two-year stint as a U.S. Army combat photographer in Vietnam. His photographs from that tour of duty have been published in military newspapers, a number of books about the war, and were included in an exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California. His work has been shown in national and international juried exhibits and is represented in the 11th edition of the Encyclopedia of Living artists and the Best of Photography 1998. Limited editions of his work are held in private collections throughout the U.S. His recent work, released as both limited and open editions, reveals a unique talent for creating evocative, impressionistic interpretations of the landscape and pastoral settings as well as intimate views of nature’s elegant designs.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

In the midst of this incredibly abundant yet ever more hectic technological age, there remains a certain longing for the respite of a still moment, a peaceful place in which to linger with an emerging thought or an enriching memory.

The simple pleasure of making photographs becomes an exploration, a revelation of the quiet spaces, the ordinary places, the often overlooked yet timeless beauty of nature and the nourishing serenity of America’s rural landscape.

The 19th century landscape painter George Inness saw the artist’s aim as “simply to reproduce in other minds the impression which a scene had made upon him.” I prefer to invite reflection, to inspire the imagining which brings personal meaning to my interpretations of nature and the landscape.
